Day 23

Today, there were two route options; route A, taking the ‘F’ roads, or route B, following the main road.

Seven of us opted for the A route, while the rest went for the B route.

The first ‘F’ road was another notch up from what we did before, with a few water crossings to up the ante, but still with the comfort of our two experienced motorcycle guides.

Whilst we successfully crossed three smaller water crossings, a larger crossing with fast flowing and deeper water was to stop us in our tracks, as the decision was made that the risk of going through was too high. However, every bit of experience is great and will no doubt, help us on another trail. So, we turned around and went back the way we came, stopping for a coffee break in Akureyri.

With time to spare, our two guides, Nathan and Julian led us on an exploration ride, which took us to a great gravel road going up high. I missed two opportunities for photos of my bike next to snow, but sometimes the ride is so exhilarating, stopping for photos is not a priority.

At one point I found going uphill into a head wind, whist standing up on the pegs quite hard work, as did the bike, because I had to keep changing down gear just to stop the wind from halting progress entirely.

Then a bit later on, five of us found ourselves getting into spirited riding on a flat twisty dirt road, accelerating out of corners faster and faster each time. We all stopped with huge grins on our faces! (just don’t let on to the leader as to what we got up to).

Just a couple of kilometres up the road from our campsite, we stopped at a high-temperature geothermal area with fumaroles and mud pots, called Namafjoll.

Setting up the tent in the high winds was interesting, and I even used the guide ropes, something I very rarely need to do!
