Day 13

The complimentary breakfast started at 8am and I was there bang on! It was a good spread and made for a great start to the day.

The morning was dull but dry, with a lot of low cloud over the mountains, though the weather forecast says it will remain dry. It will be interesting to see if the forecast is more accurate than in the UK.

On my first few miles (or should I be saying kilometres?), I came across an unusual building that I actually saw the day before. So, I stopped to take a look and get a photo. Inside was a large pump, and I guessed it was something to do with the pipeline along the side of the road, which was above ground in some places and then went underground in other places. The last time I saw a pipe like this was in Alaska along the Dalton Highway. That was much larger and carried oil from Prudhoe Bay oil fields down south to be distributed from there.

This pipe however, carried hot water. In Iceland they generally have running hot water (not heated on site) and these pumps help transporting the

hot water from geothermal sites.

I was in no rush today as I had planned a circular route doing part of west Iceland. Before I came out, I had done some research into any good bridges to cross in Iceland, and the Sword Bridge came up. It was not a high bridge by any means, and didn’t look anything interesting going over it, but it was shaped like a sword, when viewed from above. So this was on my route for today, along with a lighthouse at the western end of the peninsula.

However, the sat nav tried taking me on an interesting route going for several kilometres to a roundabout then back again, so I refused to take any further notice of it and decided to go by my own instincts instead.

I got on the correct road (the 54) heading west, but it was mostly very boring, and a light rain started to dampen my visor. I must admit, I had as much faith in the weather forecast as I did Mr. Garmin’s directions this morning, so had already stopped and put my waterproofs on!

I got as far as the Sword Bridge, went over it and then turned around to go back as I just wasn’t feeling it today. It was damp and gloomy, as was my spirits for riding, so I just thought there’s no point.

Here is a better view.

I did try taking a scenic route back, which I had spotted on the map, but this led to me to a very mucky gravel road, and I just didn’t fancy doing that for over 100km and not know what else I might come across, so I turned around once more and went back on the same boring road I came on.

By the time I got back to civilisation, it was 2pm so I stopped for something to eat, as that is all that been on my mind for the last 60km.

Then a slow ride to the campsite I was staying that night. Although, not a normal campsite, and I didn’t have to get my tent out, as I was glamping in a pod!
