I start the day by completely reorganising my luggage before leaving this huge guesthouse, (that sleeps 38 people) and that I have had all to myself. I get the camping gear back in the main bag and my overnight stay stuff in the yellow bag, as this makes it easier when staying in accommodation. Crime rate is very low in Iceland and I feel fine at leaving a lot of stuff on the bike when not staying in busy urban areas.
No real plan for the day, other than getting back onto the main ring road and heading to Reykjavik ready to meet up with the others at the end of the week. Later in the day, I will stop and find somewhere on route to stay for the night.
To start with, it was just a case of mile munching with nothing much in particular to see, other than the general beauty of the Icelandic landscape. In fact, I wondered if I would have been better going back the way I came up from the ferry, as I passed several interesting places to visit, which at the time I had to just ride past due to the time constraints.
It was also pretty damn cold and at one point I had at stop and put on my insulated jacket.
Eventually, I did come across something worth seeing. The give away was the coach that was parked nearby. It was a memorial to Stephan G. Stephenson, poet of the Rocky Mountains. Luckily for me, the coach party was about to leave, which allowed me to take photos avoiding other people in the frame. It was also nice to stop and stretch the legs with having something to do.
Another stop that was interesting was Grabrok Crater, and this was quite a leg stretch I can tell you. I saw the first flight of wooden steps and thought, no problem, I’ll whip up these, only to find there were more, lots more, and it was not too long that I was breathing heavy!
You can read about it here…
Where I am staying tonight, had a nice collection of old tractors. Here’s my favourite one…
Wait a minute, not one photo of my bike today?
I’ll try and make up for it tomorrow!
